Greece, the cradle of Western civilization, is one of Europe’s top tourist destinations. Athens, the capital, offers a myriad of experiences, landscapes, and activities. And, of course, there’s the Parthenon—solitary and pristine—standing majestically over the hazy sprawl of the city. About 80 percent of Greece is mountainous, with Mount Olympus the highest peak at 9,570 feet.

Athens, the capital city of Greece, is an ancient metropolis steeped in centuries of history. As the home of the Olympics, it hosted the original modern Olympic Games over 100 years ago. In 2004, the Games returned to Athens, prompting a major citywide facelift. The city is built around eight large hills, including the Acropolis. A visit to Athens’ most famous attraction—the impressive Parthenon, built on the Acropolis around 2,500 years ago—is unforgettable.

Other top places of interest include the Agora, a grand Roman ruin funded by Roman emperors; the Temple of Zeus, built about 1,500 years ago to honor the Greek god Zeus; Hadrian’s Arch, originally the city gate linking the Roman quarters with the original town of Athens; and the stunning Dionysos Theatre—the world’s oldest theater, where many great plays have been performed over the centuries.
